Saving a Piece of History
In 1973, a passionate group of local citizens stepped up to save the Old Lake County Courthouse from demolition. Faced with the threat of the historic building—constructed in 1878—being torn down to make way for parking, their determination sparked a movement to preserve the courthouse. Thanks to their tireless efforts, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 17, 1973.
The Lake Court House Foundation, Inc., founded in 1975, continues the mission of preserving this beloved landmark for future generations. Guided by an 18-member board, we are dedicated to maintaining the courthouse’s integrity, ensuring its ongoing preservation, and fostering community engagement. In addition to restoration and upkeep, we host annual events like the Patriot Brunch and offer the courthouse as a stunning venue for weddings and receptions. Through these efforts, we’re not only preserving history but also strengthening our community for years to come.
The Lake County Courthouse is a privately-owned landmark, supported entirely through generous private donations and operational revenues. It receives no funding from tax dollars, making community support essential to its ongoing preservation.
The Grand, located inside the Historic Lake County Courthouse, offers exceptional food and service, managing every detail of your event, whether it’s a wedding, shower, or any special occasion. Our Venue Coordinator will guide you through everything, from room layout to menu selection. We provide linens, napkins, gold Chiavari chairs, and personalized decor to elevate your guest tables and create a memorable atmosphere. The Grand also offers access to our preferred vendors list, tasting sessions, and the option to reserve Day-of Coordination for a seamless event experience.

The lower level of the Historic Lake County Courthouse is home to a variety of unique shops, each offering something special. Professional Spaces Rich in History
The second and third floors of the historic Lake County Courthouse are home to the Lake Court House Foundation Inc. and a variety of professional businesses. Visitors enter through the East entrance and are greeted by the grand marble rotunda, which once housed key county government offices. The second floor features the elegant Maki Ballroom, while the third floor preserves the original courtroom, complete with the judge's bench, jury box, and 176-seat gallery from 1908. The courthouse’s rich history continues to serve as a vibrant hub for a variety of businesses, all while maintaining its historic charm.
Lake County Historical Museum
Located on the second floor of the Historic Lake County Courthouse, the Lake County Historical Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the area's rich past. The museum features a diverse collection of artifacts, photographs, archival materials, textiles, and unique items such as clothing and furniture. Visitors can explore the history of Lake County through exhibits that highlight its cultural and historical significance, providing an educational and engaging experience for all ages.
